The U.S.-Iran conflict has escalated sharply after a roughly month-long pause, with U.S. forces striking Iranian air-defense systems, radar installations, and maritime assets on September 2, and Iran retaliating with missile and drone attacks across the region. Iran fired ballistic missiles at Jordan, which intercepted 10 of them, and a wedding venue in Kuhestak, in Iran's Hormozgan province, was struck, killing five people (including a child) and wounding more than 68 — U.S. Central Command said it "never targets civilians, unlike the IRGC," while an Iranian parliamentary official warned "these crimes will not go unpunished." President Trump said the renewed fighting "will not last long," and Iran's president signaled willingness to return to a truce if Washington reciprocates. The conflict, now in its seventh month and centered on control of the Strait of Hormuz (roughly 20% of global oil flow), has pushed oil prices up more than 50% this year and U.S. gas prices to about $4.10/gallon. Separately, the Russia-Ukraine war also intensified overnight into September 3: Russia launched 174 attack drones plus four missiles at Ukraine, killing at least one person in Dnipro and wounding over a dozen across several cities, with Odesa sustaining major damage and Kyiv logging its seventh straight day of attacks. Ukraine struck back into Russia's Belgorod region, and Zelenskyy warned that "Russian airspace will effectively be closing" due to Ukraine's long-range drone campaign, while Putin accused Zelenskyy of "state terrorism" and declined to rule out striking British military facilities over continued UK arms support to Kyiv.
MA Governor's Race
Following his decisive September 1 GOP primary win over Brian Shortsleeve (roughly 76%-24%, with Shortsleeve now endorsing him), Army veteran and health-care-tech CEO Michael Minogue is formally squaring off against incumbent Gov. Maura Healey, who ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination. Minogue is framing the race around state government overreach ("the problem is that our state government is smothering the American dream"), while Healey has moved to tie him to national politics ("Mike Minogue supports Donald Trump's agenda that is raising your costs and killing Massachusetts jobs"). Polling continues to favor Healey heavily (~50% approval) despite persistent voter concerns over housing costs and affordability. No new developments beyond post-primary positioning have emerged since September 1.
Boston Mayoral Race
No active 2026 Boston mayoral race — Michelle Wu was reelected in November 2025 and remains in office. Wu was active in Tuesday's state primary as a non-candidate, endorsing several progressive challengers in down-ballot races (see Boston/Local), but that's political activity around her, not a mayoral contest — nothing new here.

Fallout continues from Tuesday's state primary, in which Mayor Wu campaigned hard for a slate of progressive challengers with mixed results: her pick Daniel Lander leads longtime state Sen. William Brownsberger by just 20 votes in a race Brownsberger says is "too close to call" and may push to a recount; Wu-backed Persis Yu unseated Sen. Michael Rush in West Roxbury; but incumbent Sen. Nick Collins turned back Wu-backed Latoya Gayle by more than 2,000 votes, and Suffolk DA Kevin Hayden won reelection comfortably. Separately, the MBTA's new six-month fare pilot took effect September 1: riders now get unlimited transfers across bus, subway, and ferry within a two-hour window, and express bus fares dropped from $4.25 to $1.70 to match local bus fares on 150+ routes — a change the T says could save daily express riders roughly $500 over the pilot. On the crime front, a fundraiser was launched September 2 for the family of a man fatally shot on Warren Street in Roxbury the evening of August 29; BPD homicide detectives are still investigating, no arrests reported yet.

Mass General Brigham's training arm, formerly the MGH Institute of Health Professions, officially relaunched September 1 as "Mass General Brigham University of Health Professions," part of a broader rebrand of MGB's educational programs aimed at addressing healthcare-labor gaps. Beyond that institutional launch, nothing else genuinely MGB-originated in the last 24-48 hours.

The Patriots enter the final week before their season opener with a full slate of newly named captains and one lingering injury question. On Monday, Sept 1, head coach Mike Vrabel announced the 2026 captains: QB Drake Maye, TE Hunter Henry, OL Morgan Moses, S Kevin Byard III, CB Marcus Jones, and LB Robert Spillane. Today: southwest winds 10-15 kt with gusts to 20 kt, seas 2-3 ft (a mixed sea state — a 3-ft south swell at 4 seconds layered under a 3-ft southeast swell at 10 seconds), slight chance of thunderstorms/showers and patchy morning fog. Tonight: winds ease to west 5-10 kt, seas holding 2-3 ft, patchy fog returns after dark with visibility down to 1-3 nm at times. Tomorrow (Fri): winds ease further to northwest 5-10 kt becoming west in the afternoon, seas down to around 2 ft — the calmer day on the water.
Bottom line: today's the sportier day both on land and water — morning showers/storms, building afternoon humidity, and a mixed, choppier sea state — before Friday clears out nicely with sun, lighter winds, and calmer seas both onshore and off.

Striped bass remain the headline story as the calendar turns toward the fall run. Breachway Bait & Tackle (Aug 31) and Quonnie Bait & Tackle (Aug 31) both report small striped bass showing up in numbers along the local beaches, with Quonnie noting the best action coming at night on live eels around the incoming tide or slack current. Up toward Watch Hill/Fishers Island, Watch Hill Outfitters' most recent report (Aug 24) had "nice-sized" stripers off the Watch Hill Reefs and the south side of Fishers Island — bigger fish than the beach pattern to the west. Snug Harbor Marina (Aug 24) described striper fishing as slower that week off Block Island but flagged it "should pick up in the next couple of weeks as the fall migration starts" — consistent with the uptick the other shops are now seeing.
False albacore still haven't shown up locally, but every shop is flagging them as imminent — Watch Hill Outfitters (Aug 24) said albies "have not moved into the area yet," and Snug Harbor Marina (Aug 24) and Quonnie (Aug 31) both anticipate them any day now; Breachway (Aug 31) was the most bullish, saying they "should be showing up soon." Bluefish are around but scattered — mixed in with the bass and bonito per Breachway (Aug 31) and Watch Hill Outfitters (Aug 24). Green bonito remain the more consistent story: Breachway and Quonnie (both Aug 31) have them on small baitfish, requiring downsized presentations; Snug Harbor Marina (Aug 24) had the strongest bonito read of the group — "strong activity" around the Harbor of Refuge and the south county beaches.
Tuna, in one line: recreational boats are finding a good bluefin bite south of Block Island and Montauk per Breachway (Aug 31) and Watch Hill Outfitters (Aug 24, which also flagged yellowfin further offshore); Snug Harbor Marina (Aug 24) called tuna-grounds results "generally very good."
